Spartanburg man recovering from prostate cancer is top fundraiser for Over the Edge Upstate

Mark Mullen isn’t one to shy away from getting outside of his comfort zone. On Friday, the 48-year-old Spartanburg native will join more than 70 people rappelling 100-plus feet over the side of the AC Hotel Spartanburg on West Main Street. The inaugural event, called Over the Edge Upstate, is an effort to raise funds for the Cancer Association of Spartanburg & Cherokee Counties.

Over the Edge combines adventure with advocacy

The 74 Club is a group of volunteers with a very simple mission: to help those in need. The sky’s the limit for what projects the organization will undertake to raise the funds necessary to provide assistance to local nonprofits and individuals. In 2016, club members conceived their most impressive venture yet. The inaugural Over the Edge event allowed participants the chance to rappel 200 feet off the Mobile Marriott on Airport Boulevard. The event was a smashing success, with more than $100,000 raised.

Over the Edge event rappels 27 stories at Phoenix’s CityScape

The Over the Edge event for Special Olympics Arizona literally takes fundraising for athletes to new heights. The annual benefit, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 9, brings together more than 200 brave individuals who rappel 27 stories at CityScape Phoenix. This year there’s an additional sixth rope, making it the largest Over the Edge event in the country, according to a press release.
