Suncoast residents strapped on harnesses, helmets and gloves Saturday, to rappel down the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota to raise money for youth in Manatee and Sarasota Counties.
The event, Going over the Edge for our Youth, was hosted by the Suncoast chapter of Youth For Christ (YFC) with the goal of raising $125,000 to help young people who are “on the edge” here on the Suncoast.
For more than 40 years, Suncoast Youth for Christ has been helping teens who are on the edge, coming from fractured families, poverty and abuse or drug addiction, by providing positive role models in their lives.
According to a mission statement on the Youth for Christ website, the goal of raising these funds is to serve every high school, middle school and juvenile detention facility on Florida’s Suncoast.
The event brought prominent members of the community out to participate, including Sheriff Rick Wells of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and Chief Bernadette DiPino of the Sarasota Police Department.
Chief DiPino and Sheriff Wells each raised over $1,000 for the cause.
As of Saturday afternoon, the event had raised just over $121,000.
